One of my goals in 2014 was to take one “big” trip. I’ve done a lot of travelling in the past few years, but unless it was for work, it was mostly short two or three day trips – except for my honeymoon. Travelling is one of the most important things that I want to accomplish this year, because I’m finally debt free but I don’t have a mortgage or kids yet to worry about. My husband and I have so many places on our “to-go” list, but here are the three “big” trips we plan on taking this year, and their projected costs:
New Orleans ($3,000)
Last week I officially bought my FinCon 2014 ticket and on Friday I booked my hotel and flights. I’ve wanted to go to FinCon since I started blogging, but I stopped myself because it didn’t seem wise as a debt blogger to spend a ton on a financial conference. Now that I’m out of debt (and the conference is being held in an awesome spot) I’m fully prepared to shell out the cash for this three day event. My husband is coming with me, and we’re going with another couple. This will help defray the costs and will also ensure this September trip will be one to remember.
This is the “big” trip we’ve been talking about. We’re planning on doing this in December (once my husband’s work starts to slow down) and it’s going to be a bit longer of a trip, probably around 10 days. I love Paris and although my husband has never been there, I know he’ll love it too. This trip is the least firm of the three, we haven’t planned where we want to go exactly, but are watching for deals. I’m not worried, since it’s many many months away.
If you can count on your fingers, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve budgeted $7,000 for travel this year. Gulp. That’s a lot. Add that to my $10,000 emergency fund goal and my $6,000 retirement fund goal and I’m looking at saving $23,000 this year. Ouch. I’m definitely going to have to focus on making cash this year if I’m going to accomplish all of my goals, but I’m ok with that. I’ve got a plan to make money and more importantly, save money.
Are you planning any big trips for 2014? I want to know!
