Ok I know I’m a little late to the party on this one but I wanted to take a minute to talk about this new book by Preet Banerjee. It’s called Stop Over-Thinking Your Money!: The Five Simple Rules of Financial Success, and it’s become one of my favourite personal finance books.
The Search For The Perfect PF Book
I love reading personal finance books, and even more I love recommending personal finance books to family and friends. That said, I haven’t yet come across a book that I would consider a great all around intro to personal finance. I haven’t found a book that covers the basics of personal finance in plain language that is easy to understand without being too preachy, cheesy, or in-depth. Until now, that is.
Preet’s book covers the basics of personal finance in 109 easy to read pages. It took me two before-bed sittings to read this book, and it really does lay out everything you need to know very well. There are five chapters, covering topics like disaster proofing your life, paying off high interest debt, and delaying consumption. The book covers the basics of what you need to know, but if you want to expand your knowledge in any of the various topics, Preet offers additional recommended reading. This part was particularly helpful to me, and I plan on buying some of the books that were recommended.
For the more seasoned personal finance reader, you won’t be bored. Although the first section of the book covers the basics, the second half goes into more detail on the topics of investing, life insurance, and picking a financial advisor. Preet does a great job at explaining these different topics in plain, easy to understand language. I know I learned a lot front this section of the book.
Finally, I have a default book that I can offer to people who want to read a great basic book on personal finance. This book is mostly geared towards Canadians, but the advice offered on debt repayment and budgeting are really universal, so I would recommend it even for my neighbours south of the border.
