January 1st NETWORTH Update!

2013 Networth UpdateWow 2013, still not quite wrapping my head around it.

December was a great month for me, while I didn’t reach some of my goals, I still made some good progress even though I was on vacation for most of it.

I’ve been pretty much sick since I went on Christmas vacation, with everything from the flu to a terrible cold to some more, self inflicted ailments (I’m pretty sure I’m done drinking for at least a month). I’ve only started feeling better in the last few days, just in time to go back to work. But I’m ok with that, I’m just happy that I got sick while I could stay home and feel miserable, instead of when I was supposed to be at work.

December Money Sucks

December was a fairly reasonable month. I spent a lot of money on the typical Christmas stuff, like gifts and alcohol and take out, but fortunately I’d budgeted enough cash for all of that, so I didn’t exceed any of my budgets or come up short at the end of the month.

The biggest money suck by far was the power bill. Our 400 sq. ft. house, it turns out, is terribly insulated, and I mean terribly. Our power bill is $200! As much as other houses several times the size of ours, and it’s completely due to having to heat it.

We invested in some window sealers the other day, the kind you tape around the edge of the window and blow dry in place, so hopefully that helps a bit. It definitely makes a marked difference in the drafts that can be felt.

Total Debt ($-20,368.24) (-5%)

This month wasn’t my best month for debt repayment. I had to funnel some money that was ear marked for debt, towards that extra high power bill. In addition, I miscalculated a bit and more of my side hustle income had to be set aside for bills than I expected. I still managed to pay $540 in extra payments toward my student debt, plus the regular minimum payment of $301.46. Add that to my regular car minimum payment of $206.50 and I paid a total of $1,047.96 towards my student loans.

That means I’m in my fifth consecutive month of paying over a grand a month towards my debt! Woo hoo! Even with this slow month I was able to inch over that line.

Unfortunately, due to the money sucks mentioned above, I wasn’t able to finish out the year with under $20k in debt. I did, however come pretty darn close and it’ll only be a matter of weeks before I scoot under the 20k mark, so I’m ok with not making that happen this year.

What makes me happier, is that I’m starting this year off with $11,759.00 owing on my student loans. I can really visualize the day I knock them down to under 10k, and finally can get into the four digit range. I’m so excited for that day! My car loan is decreasing much more slowly and is hanging around $8,600, but I’ll attend to that once my much higher interest student loans are taken care of.

Networth ($-7,428.02) (-7%)

My net worth has been improving steadily lately, mostly because I haven’t had to tap my emergency fund in awhile. I’m so happy that it’s finally getting up closer to the 2k mark, it was quite depleted for awhile. My net worth would’ve been better, but I spent a lot of Christmas money that I’d been saving since September, so a modest improvement is all there is this month. I can only expect it to hover in place for the next six months, since I’ll be spending a lot of my savings on our approaching wedding.

Last Month’s Goals

I completely forgot about what goals I set, and had to refer back to December’s net worth post to refresh my memory, not good! Here’s how I did:

Run 50km

Fail! I spent the last two weeks of December sick as a dog, running was the last thing on my mind.

Stay on Budget for Christmas

I’m happy to say I stuck to my budget and even came out of the events with an extra $20 to my name. Go me!

Going Forward

This month is all going to be about running and wedding planning. Now that the New Year has been rung in, I’m totally on board with planning and training for the two big events of the year – my wedding and my half marathon.

Run 50km

Hey, I missed this goal last month, so I might as well set it for this month. I really need to get in shape so I can start my training with confidence.

Make a Wedding Calendar

I want to make a wedding calendar with every last to-do, deadline, and check list on there. It’ll help me stay organized!

So that was my December. Not the dramatic, knock-your-socks-off reduction in debt repayment that I was seeing in the last few months, but not bad either.

How was your December?

Good luck with the lack on insulation. There aren’t any other problems with the place, right? Our ducting had a big hole in it when we moved in, so until we got that fixed our AC was incredibly inefficient!

Unfortunately the walls and floors are very poorly insulation as well. We’ve done what we can be adding rugs and such, but they’re still very cold!

I don’t know anyone that has a great month financially in December. It’s just too hard with all the Christmas shopping that gets in the way.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

It’s so true, even if the spending is planned, it still negatively affects net worth.

  • http://twitter.com/SenseofCents Michelle

Wow I wish I could run as much as you! I need to start doing that. And that’s crazy that your bill was $200!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

      Enter a race! It’s a great motivation!

  • Jason @ WorkSaveLive

For 400 sq feet, $200 is a TON of money. We have about 1600 sq feet and our bill averages $150/month.

Great job on the debt repayment! We paid an extra $400 towards debt last month, so that was pretty exciting for us as it’s been a long time since we paid extra on it.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Good job on the extra debt repayment! Every little bit counts!

SO jealous of you. Christmas was BAD for me and my net worth went way, way down. Be proud of yourself girl! I love the detail with which you write your net worth updates-something you’ve inspired me to look into!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

I highly recommend it! It’s great to be able to check back over the months and watch things change.

I really like the wedding calendar idea!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Thanks! I’m hoping that it helps me stay on track.

  • http://budgetandthebeach.com/ Budget & the Beach

Congrats on staying in the Christmas budget but sorry you were so sick. Hope you feel better soon! My December was OK overall but not on spending. Yikes, back on track this month!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

I think a lot of people overspent so I wouldn’t feel so concerned about it if I were you. I’m finally feeling better and I’m SO happy about it.

  • http://twitter.com/PlungedinDebt Plunged in Debt

Power bills stink. I don’t know about NB but here in NS you can go on a monthly budget which helps us avoid the 600.00 bill come February (we pay bi-monthly) Something to look into. Great job on your goals Jordann!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

A few people have mentioned that, I’m definitely going to look into it!

  • John S @ Frugal Rules

Great work on staying within budget for Christmas, even coming out with a little to spare…that’s awesome! I hate utility bills as well, I can’t imagine a $200 bill though.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

I hate utility bills because they’re hard to plan for. I’m such a planner that the unknown factor of utilities drives me mad!

  • http://www.thehappyhomeowner.net/ The Happy Homeowner

Ugh…I feel your pain on the power bill–I had a $190 shocker two years ago and I’m still haunted by it…haha

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Hopefully this is the worst month, but somehow I doubt it since the coldest months still lay ahead of us.

  • http://www.momoneymohouses.com/ Mo’ Money Mo’ Houses

Wow, looks like you’ve made some great progress. And if you need any help making your wedding calendar, just let me know. I’ve been planning my wedding for a year now and have way too much knowledge about planning!

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Thanks! I might take you up on that, there’s so much to figure out!

  • Hawaii Planner

I hear you on the power bill. We just got ours, & it about gave me a heart attack. :-)
I’m a runner & a financial blogger as well, & love reading about your progess.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Hey thanks I’m glad you find my writing entertaining!

  • K.K. @ Living Debt Free Rocks!

Good job on still being able to pay over $1K to the debt in spite of the December events! When I was living in Quebec I was on the equalized payment plan for my Hydro bill. Perhaps that may work out better for you, but as you said the real culprit is the insulation problem.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Yes the insulation is definitely the real problem, but I’ll look at equalized billing, that might be a good temporary solution.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianBudgetB CanadianBudgetBinder

Lots of people think Dec sucks for money me included especially when we get our almost $400 hydro and water bill. We spent alot more in December than we have in months. I think you did pretty darn good this year with all the debt repayment you must be happy about that. Keep up the great work!! Mr.CBB

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

I’m definitely super pleased about the progress I’ve made on my debt depayment in 2012!

  • http://www.outliermodel.com/ OutlierModel

I think add long add You don’t fall back in December its a win! What’s you’re net worth goal for the year? You should have no problem cracking positive numbers.

    • http://twitter.com/myalternatlife Jordann

Hmm, I didn’t really set one. I just want to be in the black honestly, I think that’ll be a huge milestone for me.

  • http://twitter.com/WInformatics Suba Iyer

$200 is a lot for a 400 sq ft apartment, that sucks! Inspite of that looks like you are doing great! Only ~7400 to the black!

The entire 2012 was a money sink for us. Hopefully 2013 will be better.

  • jefferson @SeeDebtRun

i am very impressed at how well you have been able to sustain your running hobby.. that is definitely something i am hoping to do in 2013!

  • holly

I didn’t know you were wedding planning! When is the big day?
